A tongue tumor was diagnosed by the referring veterinarian in this 14 year old miniature poodle dog. The mass extends close to the midline.
It was originally diagnosed as a granular cell tumor.
Partial glossectomy post excision
Histopathology confirmed clean margins. The definitive diagnosis was liposarcoma . This miniature poodle dog did excellent with no feeding tube following local blocks and a fentanyl patch. Liposarcomas represent only 2-3% of tongue tumors in dogs (1) They are malignant but are locally invasive and don’t tend to metastasize. (2)
