This long story short is that I have a 1 year old intact female pit bull that was hit by a car. Due to all of her injuries, prognosis, costs, etc…. euthanasia was the client decision. Due to staff interest and her personality she was signed over to us. She's facing a leg amputation but the focus of my questions is her mandibular fracture.
Based on the radiographs below, I am thinking that a dental splint is the treatment of choice. Referral isn't an option so I'd like to try to do this in-clinic. If anyone has experience with this I'd love to get some guidance on the placement of the splint. I know that asking this likely indicates a need to refer, but that isn't an option at this time and euthanasia is our other option. We are comfortable with general dentistry and some orthopedics but we have not placed a dental splint in the past. So- if you can offer recommendations as to preferred acrylic, tips for mixing/handling, and how you would span the fracture e.g. 1st 4 premolars, canine, turn and include incisors and contralateral canine, etc….
I did close the gingival defect on the lingual aspect after copious flushing today to prevent ongoing contamination.
Advise welcome.
Thanks in advance
