The Definitive Veterinary Extraction Protocol Preview

Transcript: The Definitive Veterinary Extraction Protocol Preview

Speaker: By utilizing the wet labs that we have multiple times a year, seeing what students need, and trying to fill those needs with different techniques and different videos to make it easier for these extractions to occur, make it faster for you to get through your procedures, and have a fantastic outcome.

Speaker: You’re just putting a nice firm pressure on that to the point where you can keep moving that down in to expand that periodontal ligament space and eventually get to the point where this is mobile enough that you can use your extraction forceps to get it out of there.

Speaker: So you see how long it’s taking. This is not unusual, and we’re not going all the way to the apex on this one. We mentioned that we don’t always have to. I feel like I can get this one out of there without having to do that. Even though it’s not compromised from a periodontal standpoint or an endodontic standpoint, it’s just fractured.

Speaker: So we’re going to place that elevator there after we’ve created that groove. So you see where that’s nice and clean there. We’ve got our grooves, and then we’re just going to follow, again, this root up this way to the shortest distance between two points here to section the distal from the mesial root.

Speaker: Same prep. See, going up underneath that mucosa with that, and this is the feline football bur. And then there’s that attached gingiva area next to that incisor. It shows it really well, just going in there and creating your little space for your suture.

Speaker: So, just to give you an idea, this is just the setup. Again, we’ve got our template up there. We’re populating that as we go, and we’ll show you how to do that here in a minute. Turning the patient to get the next views, and then we’re working on another patient, finishing up, and then I’ll be ready to do that other case when they get the X-rays done and I’ve closed that last little bit of what I’ve done.

Speaker: Does heavy tartar cause any significant artifact on the radiographs if taken prior to cleaning? No, and that’s a really good question, and I didn’t go into that part of the benefits of making sure you have a system in the dentistry suite, so let me touch on that real quick.

Speaker: So, the very first thing you want to do is take radiographs. So that might answer your question right there. Does it cause a problem? It definitely does not, except for in one instance.

Are These Pain Points Slowing You Down?

  • Are fractured roots and difficult cases slowing you down and costing you time?
  • Do you want to perform extractions with the confidence and efficiency of a specialist?
  • Are you struggling with the mandibular canine, carnassial, or feline extractions?
  • Do you wish you had a repeatable, physics-based protocol that works on every tooth?
  • Are complications like dehiscence, hemorrhage, or root fractures keeping you up at night?

If you answered yes to any of these, The Definitive Veterinary Extraction Protocol is exactly what you need.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • ✅ Perform simple and surgical extractions with precision, speed, and confidence
  • ✅ Apply physics-based elevation techniques that prevent root fractures before they start
  • ✅ Master the carnassial approach that cuts a 60-minute surgery in half
  • ✅ Execute envelope flaps that close without tension every time
  • ✅ Navigate feline extractions with the micro-surgical precision they require
  • ✅ Manage complications including fractured roots, hemorrhage, and mandibular fracture
  • ✅ Apply biologic regeneration with PerioVive hyaluronic acid gel for bone and soft tissue

Course Outline – 8 Comprehensive Modules

Module 1: Extraction Indications & Radiographic Decision-Making

  • Recognizing the periodontal disease patterns that mandate extraction versus attempted salvage.
  • Interpreting periapical lucencies, root convergence, and pulp cavity asymmetry to identify non-vital teeth.
  • Evaluating tooth resorption stages in dogs and cats to plan complete versus partial extraction.
  • Assessing malocclusions, crowding, discoloration, and worn or fractured teeth for selective extraction decisions.
  • Real-world case examples include suborbital fistulas, dentigerous cysts, and feline vestibular bone expansion.

Module 2: Periodontal Therapy & Bone Defect Management

  • Staging periodontal disease by attachment loss rather than gross crown appearance alone.
  • Performing closed root planing and subgingival curettage with correct periodontal curette technique.
  • Applying PerioVive (hyaluronic acid) to increase attachment gain and block epithelial down-growth.
  • Treating horizontal versus infrabony (vertical) bone defects with bone grafts, Doxirobe, and membranes.
  • Video demonstrations of pocket therapy, defect repair, and long-term follow-up outcomes.

Module 3: Simple Extractions & Core Surgical Principles

  • Executing simple extractions on incisors and premolars with luxator elevators — no flap required.
  • Making stab incisions at 15 degrees to preserve gingiva and create a clean tooth-bone interface.
  • Selecting and using the four workhorse burs: 701L cross-cut, 699, round bur, and diamond football bur.
  • Mastering the loose handpiece grasp and dorsal recumbency positioning for maximum speed and control.
  • Suturing fundamentals: cutting needles, interdental sutures, buccinator release, and tension-free closure.

Module 4: Deciduous Extractions & Malocclusion Management

  • Extracting deciduous canines safely using the deciduous extraction set to protect adult tooth buds.
  • Recognizing class II malocclusions and palatal trauma as same-day surgical emergencies.
  • Managing interlock cases by extracting mandibular canines and incisors to restore normal jaw growth.
  • Performing feline maxillary canine extractions around vestibular bone expansion and friable gingiva.
  • Preventing post-operative trauma with routine odontoplasty and bonding of the mandibular canine crown tip.

  • Sectioning three-rooted teeth cleanly at the furcation using the correct bur orientation.
  • Performing mandibular canine extractions with an envelope flap and buccinator muscle release.
  • Recognizing when to stop elevating and remove more bone to prevent iatrogenic jaw fracture.
  • Real-time video walkthroughs of both extractions in dog and cat patients.
