Developing Tooth Trauma in a Puppy Resulting in Unerupted Nonvital Canine

Dr. Beckman,
This is Sadie, a 6 year old JRT presented for OVH. An incompletely erupted crown of #204 was noticed. Also seen was discoloration of crown of #203. Lateral and lateral-oblique dental radiographs were taken after dental prophylaxis performed. The record indicates she may have suffered facial trauma (hit w/ golf ball) as puppy. Thanks! David Kane, dental tech @ Woodworth Animal Hospital (Waynesboro, VA)

by Brett on Jun.07, 2009, under Veterinary Dental Cases

MTA Placement -

MTA Placement -

The approach in this case was to access the apex surgically, then amputate the apical 5 mm of the root.  Necrotic pulp was present adjacent to the cement corresponding to the lucency in the fill.   A granuloma was present in the periapical bone and was removed.  A round bur was used to remove cement to allow for MTA placement.

This 6 year old dog had a root canal performed in the UK 5 years ago.  The obturation material was a sealer cement.  What is the treatment of choice?
