CUPS or Chronic Ulcerative Paradental Stomatitis is responsible for these severe ulcerations on the upper lip of this dog. CUPS is a severe reaction to plaque . The patients immune system recognizes plaque, especially in regions where calculus is present, as very foreign to the system and attacks the tissue that rests upon the tooth where the plaque resides.

Extraction of the teeth where the tissue rests is curative and the only effective treatment.

A bone graft (Synergy) was used to maintain the marginal bone height due to the close approximation of the bone between the extraction site and the distal aspect of the distal root of the first molar. Doxyrobe was utilized as a membrane on top of the graft to prevent the downgrowth of epithelium into the defect. New bone will be present in several weeks.
